Srinagar, Sept 26: A leading private engineering college went ahead with its ‘cultural extravaganza’ despite opposition from Hurriyat Conference (G) leader Syed Ali Geelani with Minister for Higher education Mr. Abdul Gani Malik and Science & Technology Minister Agha Ruhullah prominent guests.
Malik said that major decisions were taken by State Government to modernize higher and technical education both in Government and private educational institutions during last couple of years.
The Minister who was Guest of Honour at function of a 2-day cultural cum technical extravaganza organized by SSM college of Engg and Technology at Parihaspora was addressing a gathering of students, faculty members of various participating colleges and Universities including SSM College.
Minister for Science and Technology, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Ex-MP A.R. Shaheen also attended the function.
Malik impressed upon teachers to make education employable by imparting skilled training as well as academics to the students. He asked private partners in education to design projects aimed at facing modern challenges in education.
Minister for Science and Technology said that Government is committed to encourage students to take up Science subject as their career and accordingly scholarships are given to meritorious students and teachers so that the financial support will boost their morale to go ahead in learning science and technology.
Referring to his inspection of various stalls, showcasing scientific modules in the college, Mr. Mehdi asked the enthusiastic students to approach science and technology department for obtaining logistic support for innovations. He assured that all possible help will be extended to aspiring students for bringing shine in their activities.
Earlier, on the arrival of dignitaries Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Dilafroz welcomed the guests and showed them various scientific modules, exhibited by students of SSM and other institutions of science and technology.
The Minister evinced keen interest in the modules and congratulated the students for their effort in this direction.
Chairman of the college, Qazi Shabir Ahmed in his welcome address said that SSM Trust is the only Engineering College catering to the needs of about 10 million populations.
He said presently six under graduate courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Communication Engineering, BBA at Degree level and six courses of Engineering at Diploma level are being taught in the campus.
He said PG course in MBA, MCA, are also run by the college. He said from next academic session, the college will start PG courses in physics and electronics.
A scintillating cultural bonanza was presented by the students of the host College and other colleges and universities of valley.
Later, the Ministers awarded trophies and certificates to toppers of charity extravaganza for their encouragement.
Among others, the function was attended by Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, G.A Khwaja and Secretary Higher Education Gazanfer Hussain.
Principal of the College, Prof Nazir Ahmed Shah compared the programme on the occasion. He appealed the dignitaries to extend fullest support to SSM so that the college flourishes and becomes a highest seat of technical learning for the students of the State.
On Sunday Hurriyat Conference (G) Geelani had alleged the event was being organized with the help of Army. It had also appealed the students of SSM College to boycott the event.
An official of SSM college refuted Geelanis claims that an inter-state two day event Santoor was being organised with the help of army saying: The event is purely non political and army has nothing to do with it.
The college official said The claims of resistance leader were baseless. The event is organized by college and its students and the charity raised through the event will be given to a mental asylum and leprosy patients.
